#Showbiz: 'Sepet' to be retold as musical

KUALA LUMPUR: After 14 years since its screening, the late Yasmin Ahmad’s award-winning movie is finally being adapted into a musical production.

Called Sepet The Musical, it will be staged at GMBB, Bukit Bintang from Sept 19 to 22, Sept 26 to 29 and Oct 4 to 6.

A production by Liver&Lung, this Malaysian-based theatre company takes pride in adapting the much-loved story about a VCD seller Jason and secondary school girl named Orked. Jason will be played by Joshua Gui while Badrika Bahadur will star as Orked.

Directed by Shafeeq Shajahan, it will be retold with the addition of songs to go with the story.

Shafeeq said that the team is honoured to pay homage to this Malaysian film, a cultural milestone in the country’s cinematic history.

“The various themes that the great Yasmin Ahmad strung together still hold deep relevance for us even 14 years after its debut.

“We are remaining true to the source material and introducing authentically-Malaysian music and lyrics, reigniting its timeless narrative for a new generation of Malaysians,” said Shafeeq who together with Badrish Bahadur are responsible for composing the music scores.
