#Showbiz: 'Sangkar' bags RM10.3mil in 2 weeks

KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed martial arts (MMA) blockbuster Sangkar has been making a killing at the box office since opening on Aug 29.

The action adventure which stars Zul Ariffin and Remy Ishak as MMA fighters has bagged RM10.3 million in 17 days.

Infinitus Gold executive producr Gayatri Su-Lin Pillai said in a recent news report that viewers around the country had been giving it "tremendous support".

She said: "Sangkar has been a hit with fans around the country, and at every stop on our nationwide roadshow, they've turned up in full force to support the main stars and watch the movie."

Gayatri also said that the brilliant storytelling of director Kabir Bhatia, as well as the stellar acting of Zul and Remy made Sangkar "stand out".

"They've all given fans a story that is not only action-packed but also full of important lessons, such as sportsmanship, family values and pulling oneself up after a fall.

"And at the same time, many have given their thumbs up to the power-packed team-up of Zul and Remy, a first for both actors."

Sangkar, which is based on an idea from MMA fan Zul, tells the story of an arrogant MMA fighter Adam (Zul) and his family-oriented rival Johan (Remy).

One day, Johan is badly beaten up and left paralysed by gangsters who are fans of Adam.

Adam begins to lose popularity when MMA fans blame him for Johan's injuries, and he chooses to redeem himself by looking after Johan.

He also resorts to joining underground MMA fights to fund Johan's medical expenses, despite the danger they pose to his well-being.

Sangkar is jointly produced by Infinitus Gold, Primeworks Studios, Astro Shaw and MM2 Entertainment.

It also stars Mira Filzah, Ray, Nik Adam Mika and Aman Graseka.
