KUALA LUMPUR: Martial arts biopic Ip Man 4: The Finale has broken box-office records in Malaysia, becoming the highest-grossing Chinese film in the country's history.
According to a news report last Friday, Ip Man 4 garnered total ticket sales of RM30.3 million in just 13 days.
During the same period, it grossed US$97.6 million (RM396.3 million) in China and continues to rule its box office.
Starring Donnie Yen as the title character, Ip Man 4 directed by Wilson Yip is about the Wing Chun grandmaster who famously trained action hero Bruce Lee.
The final film in the Ip Man film series, it sees the grandmaster travel to San Francisco, the United States in the 1960s to look for a school for his son.
Here he confronts a prejudiced sergeant in the US Marines who refuses to incorporate Chinese martial arts into their hand-to-hand combat training, despite widespread support for it.
The film series began with Ip Man in 2008, followed by Ip Man 2 (2010), Ip Man 3 (2015) and Ip Man 4.
The first movie depicted the grandmaster's early life in Foshan, China during the Sino-Japanese War of the 1930s while the second focused on his life in Hong Kong and friendship with his students. The third movie showed Ip Man promoting his brand of kung-fu amongst an international audience.
Ip Man 4 opened in cinemas on Dec 20 last year.
