#Showbiz: Andy Lau the man behind Paralympian's success story

KUALA LUMPUR: Hong Kong megastar Andy Lau is the unsung hero behind the successful sporting career of the Special Autonomous Region's best known Paralympian William So Wa Wai.

Hong Kong entertainment portal ET Today reported yesterday that the 60-year-old donated HK$100,000 (RM53,300) a month to So since 1996 to help him excel in athletics.

Lau also appointed So who has cerebral palsy, the administrator for his fan club after learning that he faced financial difficulties.

So, 40, who was born with jaundice which affected his hearing and balance received a full salary even during his training.

The Paralympian has competed in five Paralympic Games since 1996 and has bagged six gold, three silver and three bronze medals before retiring in 2016.

So is the world record holder for the 100-metre and 200-metre men's T36 Paralympic events for athletes with cerebral palsy.

So's life story was made into the film Zero To Hero which stars Sandra Ng and Leung Chung-Hang. It premiered on Aug 12.
