#Showbiz: Michael Ang suggests compulsory urine tests for film crews

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular director Michael Ang believes the best way to curb the drug menace in the film industry is to have all actors, actresses and film crew members undergo urine tests.

The 45-year-old who is also a producer hoped that all production companies would cooperate with the government in its on-going battle with the drug menace that had plagued the country for ages.

"From day one, I have told everybody working with me to stay away from drugs if they want to be on my film set. What you do outside is your business," said Ang in an online interview yesterday.

"Please be respectful of the film industry and your co-workers, do not cause unnecessary problems and tarnish the good name of the industry.

"If one person is caught with drugs on the film set, the entire industry will get a bad name. The companies which produce films and dramas will also get blacklisted," said Ang, whose latest drama series Sihir will premiere on Astro Ria on Nov 1.

Ang hoped that the government would consider making urine tests compulsory for film crews.

"This is the best way to nip the drug menace in the film industry in the bud.

"I hope everybody in the film industry will give it serious thought, especially the National Film Development Corporation (Finas), and all associations representing the industry," said Ang.

It was reported on Oct 11 that an actor, director and assistant director were arrested at a film set in Kuala Kangsar, Perak for alleged possession of drugs.
