#Showbiz: Syafinaz, Soo Wincci in Opera Serikandi Nusantara this weekend

KUALA LUMPUR: The traditional tales of Malay princesses and heroines from the Malay Archipelago of old will be brought to life through song in Opera Serikandi Nusantara 2022 at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) on Dec 3 and 4.

A sequel to the Malay Opera Puteri Saadong from 2015, this art music production by D'Catz at Work features original compositions by Prof Dr Tazul Tajuddin with executive producer Catriona Au.

The contemporary Malaysia opera will feature the historical stories and legends of Princess Gunung Ledang, Princess Cik Siti Wan Kembang, Princess Saadong, Princess Hang Li Po, Princess Santubong and Princess Sejinjang.

Others include Princess Ulek Mayang, Princess Walinong Sari, Princess Zaleha, Princess Bidasari and Tun Fatimah.

Described as an emotional excerpt expressed in song in a concert performance format of voice with accompaniment, these stories were based on the children's book, Legendary Princesses of Malaysia, written by Raman and illustrated by Emila Yusof.

The show will feature well known Malaysian vocalists and celebrities such as Datuk Syafinaz Selamat, Dr Soo Wincci, Khairunnisa Diyana, Chaing Yi Ling and Dr Phang Kong Chien.

Supporting casts are SATB singers Veleria Ng, Koh Sin Kit, Hanif Mustaffa, James Long and the Luebeck New Music Ensemble led by Max Riefer from Germany.

The 75-minute live music show at KLPAC's Pentas 2 which begins at 8.30pm will feature dialogue and songs in Malay, Chinese, Cambodian (Champa) and the Kedahan dialect.

The production is supported by CENDANA's Performing Arts Presentation Funding Programme and part of the ticket proceeds will go to Kiwanis Clubs of Kuala Lumpur & Klang Central as a community service project for the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Centres.
