Sarawak enhances collaboration with Indonesia to support Nusantara's development

KUCHING: Sarawak is set to extend its cooperative efforts with Indonesia, with a specific focus on aiding the development of the latter's new capital, Nusantara, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the state's readiness to contribute to the developmental initiatives, particularly in hydroelectric power.

Sarawak, through Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), boasts a 25 per cent stake in the Mentarang Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) in Malinau, East Kalimantan, which plays a crucial role in powering the region. This existing collaboration underscores the proactive engagement of Sarawakian companies in Kalimantan, particularly in the western part, due to its geographical proximity.

Abang Johari highlighted the anticipated ease of travel and business interactions following the potential opening of borders and the establishment of direct flight routes between Pontianak and Sarawak. These developments are expected to enhance cooperation between the two regions.

During a ceremony at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Abang Johari shed light on the fruitful discussions held between the Sarawak and Indonesian business communities, represented by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and their Sarawak counterparts. These dialogues explored various sectors for collaboration, notably in trade, encompassing the import and export of goods.

Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Syed Md Hasrin Tengku Hussin encouraged Malaysian enterprises to explore investment opportunities in East Kalimantan, particularly Samarinda and Balikpapan. These cities' proximity to Nusantara positions them as strategic locations for potential business ventures and investments.
