#Showbiz: Anwar's biopic on Netflix surpasses The Pope's Exorcist to take number one spot

KUALA LUMPUR: The biopic Anwar: The Untold Story which premiered on Netflix last Thursday is currently at top of the list of most-watched shows on the streaming platform in the country, surpassing The Pope's Exorcist.

In a news report today, the film's executive producer, Zulkiflee Anwar Haq (a.k.a. Zunar the satirical cartoonist) says that the positive response could only mean that the film produced by Yusrych Global Sdn Bhd has been well-received by Malaysian viewers.

"Possibly, many didn't have the chance to catch it at the cinemas when it opened in May, as some had already been busy preparing for the 2023 state elections (which involved six states last month).

"Unlike other types of movies, biopic films need to be watched several times before viewers could finally get its message. So to make it available for multiple viewings on streaming platforms such as Netflix is the right move," Zunar was quoted in the report.

Zunar, who is also the film's screenwriter, said that as the movie is also a form of documentation of the political journey of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, it will soon be screened at higher learning institutions as a reference source for students.

The movie directed by Indonesian director Viva Westi is starred by Farid Kamil as Anwar and Indonesian Acha Septriasa as Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
