#Showbiz: Catch magical 'Scheherazade And The Sea' MPO concert on Dec 16

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will be performing its finale concert for the MPO's 25th anniversary celebration this year with Scheherazade And The Sea on Dec 16.

The enchanting concert is set to take place at 8.30pm at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) in KLCC.

Written by Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade showcases dazzling orchestral colours and sonorities.

It is based on the marvellous tales of the Arabian Nights, an intriguing adventure set in the exotic lands of Persia.

The story about a charming and witty girl by the name Scheherazade provides a convenient framework to drape a rich and exciting tapestry of the dramatic narratives.

The music was first performed in St. Petersburg in 1888 with the composer conducting.

Also included in the concert programme is Wagner's storm-tossed Overture to The Flying Dutchman and Debussy's La Mer.

The latter premiered in 1905 in Paris, and is a work that richly and evocatively portrays the sea in its varied moods through vibrant timbres that stir the memories.

Renowned conductor Eiji Oue returns to the DFP podium after his last collaboration with the MPO in 2018.

He has worked with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Munich and Tokyo Philharmonics, to name a few. He has also collaborated with classical music artistes such as Sarah Chang, Conrad Tao, Roger Muraro and Trio Jean Peul.

Tickets are priced from RM198 to RM488.
