#Showbiz: Award-winning bhangra artiste Surj dies

KUALA LUMPUR: Award-winning bhangra artiste Datuk Sukhjit Singh Gill passed away at 4.15pm today due to a heart attack. He was 34.

Sukhjit, who was fondly known as Surj, was one-half of bhangra duo Goldkartz together with his brother, Datuk Manjit Singh Gill.

Dubbed Malaysia's bhangra ambassadors, the music act has won several local and international awards, as well as performed in various events and festivals around the world.

They performed at the Russian-Asian Modern Culture Festival in Moscow and at the 1Malaysia Sikh Fest at Dataran Ipoh, Perak in 2014.

"Goldkartz were the first Malaysian artiste to perform at Wembley and did music for Bollywood.

"Sukhjit's latest music release, Sab Gazab, gained 34 million YouTube views in 8 months," said his eldest brother, Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill, in a statement today.

The youngest son of Ipoh-based lawyer, Tan Sri Darshan Singh Gill, Sukhjit received his early education at St Michael Institution and was a law graduate from Universiti Malaya.

In 2014, Sukhjit was called to the Bar at the Ipoh High Court, becoming the fifth member of his family to become a lawyer.

His funeral will be held on Dec 26 at 1pm at the Sikh Crematorium on Jalan Gurdwara, next to Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Ipoh.

Sukhjit, who passed away at 4.15pm today, is survived by wife, Datin Simerjit Kaur, and a daughter.
