#Showbiz: Being young with 'Subang', by Fariz and Fhan

AS an aspiring politician, Datuk Seri Fariz Hazurin approaches the many layers of society, from the oldest to the youngest.

With a specific focus on youngsters, he has chosen the popular platform of hip-hop.

Fariz, who is Subang Umno Youth leader, first released the single "Bangkit" (Rise Up) alongside fellow hip-hop artiste Fhan early last year.

Following the success of that track, they are continuing their collaboration with a second single titled "Subang".

The new song is simply a declaration of their appreciation for the place where they have contributed their services and grown up.

"Being a hip-hopping politician makes it easier for me to connect with and empathise with the dilemmas of young people, given that hip-hop music is so close to the hearts of the youth," said Fariz.

"Every music genre has its own characteristics, and through hip-hop, every tempo, tone and lyric can send a positive message to the public."

The 33-year-old artiste and politician added: "This is my way of reaching out to the youth. I see this genre as close to the hearts and souls of young people, and my old friend Fhan totally agrees."

Subang was released on digital streaming platforms last Dec 22 and has been played more than 2,000 times to date.

An official music video for the catchy track was recently launched on Universal Music Malaysia's YouTube channel and shows the hip-hop duo visiting various parts of Subang to meet and greet their fans.

The song also encourages the youth to work hard, have a vision and never give up.

Fariz said: "Subang is a hyped city that is a popular choice amongst young people for spending their leisure time. Subang has everything the young people would want."

Fhan, or Farhan Alias, said Subang was a modern city with its own identity and that certainly made it quite unique and appealing.

"I love Subang as I grew up here. We hope that the song Subang can become an anthem for young people who consider Subang their place to hang out, make a living, or go through experiences good or bad."

Fhan is also a businessman, and shares with Fariz a common vision of making Subang a "happening" place for Klang Valley folk and Malaysians in general.

The 34-year-old hip hopper said: "Bangkit and Subang bring together two hip-hoppers from different backgrounds but with a strong understanding of the popular music genre.

"We both have shared experiences that are translated into common music tastes and common visions for the growth of Malaysian music."

While some parents might be taken aback by hip-hop's propensity for being crass and containing profanities in its lyrics at times, the two are of the opinion that these characteristics do not define the genre.

"Hip hop doesn't have to be filled with swear words or feature messages that do not reflect our culture.

"The genre is more than that and there are also many hip hop songs that are positive and feature good values.

"As a politician and a father, I am aware of this so I just focus on the honourable values that can be shared with the youth."
