Get screened for scoliosis

SCOLIOSIS is a sideways curvature of the spine that most often is diagnosed in adolescents. Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some curves worsen as children grow and severe scoliosis can be disabling.

An especially severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within the chest, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly, and thus creating complications such as chronic pain, breathing difficulties, and a reduced capacity for exercise.

In conjunction with the official awareness month of scoliosis in June, Alty Orthopaedic Hospital has partnered with pharmaceutical company, Viatris to drive awareness on scoliosis among Malaysians.

The collaboration will be held across 4 pharmacy branches in the Klang valley and walk-in visitors will receive a complimentary posture screening to detect early signs of scoliosis.

Parents with young children are highly encouraged to undertake these posture screenings.

"As a healthcare institution, we are committed to drive awareness and educate Malaysians to detect early signs of scoliosis. Without early treatment, prolonged scoliosis can severely impact health in the long term," says consultant orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon and chairman of Alty Orthopaedic Hospital, Associate Professor (C) Dr G Ruslan Nazaruddin Simanjuntak.

The screenings will be held at the following locations from 10am-5pm:

June 19: Health Lane, Damansara Uptown, Petaling Jaya.

June 25, Health Lane, The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur.

June 26, Caring Pharmacy, Section 17, Petaling Jaya.
