#HEALTH: For sweet slumber

MANY of us are guilty of paying the least attention to the one piece of furniture in our homes where we spend the most time - the mattress.

Usually, we buy a mattress within hours (or much less) of trying out a few different brands in the store.

Most of us usually purchase a mattress when we first move into a home and then forget about it, assuming it's going to last forever.

For the next 10-20 years we continue sleeping on that same mattress without a thought as to how it could impact sleep, especially over such a long period.

Good sleep starts with a good mattress, it's an undeniable fact.

Sleep is really important because it affects how we function and the fact that everyone has a mattress, doesn't mean they are getting good quality sleep, says founder and CEO of Sonno, Fabio Miceli.

Sonno is a sleep company that was established in 2017 with one mission in mind - to help people sleep well and live better.

"You need good, deep rest. It's going to affect everything else that you do when you are awake. When you have a good night's sleep, you feel refreshed and have the energy to face the day," says Miceli.

THE ROLE OF SLEEP

When we talk about the pillars of good health, people often focus on diet and exercise but good sleep is also a crucial component, he explains.

Poor sleep is a global problem as our lives have become more hectic and stressful. The extensive and endless use of digital devices don't help us get good sleep either.

Miceli believes it's important to have a grace period of 20-30 minutes where we put our devices away before bedtime and prepare the mind and body for rest.

"We have to start paying more attention to sleep. People already focus on food and exercise but they still don't understand that not getting good sleep can compromise the other two pillars of good health."

If we don't get good quality sleep, we are more likely to feel tired or lazy and make poor food choices, binge eat and not exercise well enough.

Miceli points out that athletes, for example, understand very well how important sleep is because it's their job to perform at 100 per cent, physically and mentally.

For this reason, they pay a lot of attention to sleep and products for good sleep so their bodies can be fully rested and perform at their best.

"Without sleep, athletes can't perform and they know it. The rest of us assume that if we have a mattress then it's fine, but it's important to invest in a good one."

The best way to find the right mattress is to test it out in the comfort of your home, in privacy, he adds.

Making a huge decision like buying a mattress, within just a short period in the store, after lying on different beds for a few minutes each, is never a good idea.

It is for this reason that Sonno offers its' 100-night trial for its mattress. It is important to test it out for an extended period, within the comfort of your home, to see how it suits you and the impact it has on your sleep, explains Miceli.

"There's no way you can lay down on a few different mattresses for five to ten minutes and then make a decision that will follow you for the next 8-10 years. That's not right and we wanted to change that. It's not the experience customers should have when buying a mattress."

SEE, FEEL AND EXPERIENCE

SONNO recently opened its first flagship store located in Publika. The brand, recognised for its premium mattress-in-a-box and other sleep products at affordable prices, is aiming for the new store to create a new journey for its customers, providing a seamless omnichannel shopping experience.

In the flagship store, also known as the Sonno Sleep House, customers can finally touch and feel the entire sleep collection that the company offers. The thoughtfully designed space includes three large house-shaped nap rooms to provide the comfort needed for customers to test the mattresses.

In addition, the sleep specialists who serve as Sonno's sales representatives, will be dressed in pyjamas to assist consumers in the purchasing process and provide a fun customer experience.

In conjunction with the launch, Sonno also revealed its latest sleep collection, the Sonno Signature Bed Frame, which is the company's first product line as it enters into the bedroom furnishing segment.

Inspired by the Japandi design that has been trending of late, Sonno's bed frame design is made with 100 per cent Malaysian natural rubberwood and essentially has zero metal components. The bed was specifically designed to allow customers to easily assemble it without the need for any tools
