STAY: Luxurious getaway in Hawaii

One can be assured of five-star treatment and a spectacular ocean view at The Royal Hawaiian Resort Waikiki, writes Hanna Hussein

"ALOHA" greets a lovely lady in pink. She gracefully place a delicate fresh orchid lei around my neck, and hands me a refreshing welcome drink.

I am in the grand lobby, waiting to be checked-in atThe Royal Hawaiian Resort Waikiki, one of Marriott's Luxury Collection properties in Oahu Island, Hawaii. Affectionately known as the Pink Lady, the iconic pink stucco facade inspired by the Spanish-Moorish architecture is a conspicuous landmark.

The Royal Hawaiian which was built in 1927 is an established resort that sits right on Waikiki Beach, among the world's top 10 beaches.

In fact, it is one of the oldest luxury hotels on the island.

I am already super-psyched just being here in Hawaii, let alone given the chance to stay in a luxurious resort where so many celebrities and socialites have stayed.

VINTAGE FEEL

The Historic Grove room at the historic wing will be my stay for the three nights I'm in Hawaii. Stepping into the room feels like travelling back into the 1920s.

It's a decent room with vintage interior of customised dark wooden furniture, the warm pallette accented by a bold fuchsia pink and platinum silver headboard, crisp white bedding and boudoir pillows. It's so comfortable lying on the antique woodcarved bed with its lush mattress.

The room also has an en-suite bathroom with standing shower and guests are provided with amenities by Malie Organics, a local brand that offers all-natural products embodying the magnificence of Hawaii and its tropical flora.

Even though I don't get to check out the Abhasa Spa, I still get to treat my body to a lush, nourishing blend of therapeutic botanicals from Malie Organics.

My room does not come with an ocean view. Most rooms at the historic wings face the garden because in the old days, Hawaii could only be reached via cruise ships. Since guests spent months with the ocean being their only view, they requested for garden and mountain sceneries when back on land.

But, if you prefer the ocean view, the more contemporary Mailani tower offers an intimate lanai for a private vantage point of the sparkling Pacific Ocean.

LOCATION PRIVILEGE

The Royal Hawaiian is a beachfront hotel with a spectacular view of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. Although it is not a private beach, guests still get first-class facilities, including a sun lounger with a cute pink parasol along the beach.

Activities include sunbathing, swimming, surfing, stand paddling, canoeing and more. In fact, surfing lesson are also available.

The hotel is also located along the shopping district of Kalakaua Avenue, where you can shop till you drop. Hard Rock Cafe, Sephora, Forever 21, H&M, RipCurl and many other brands including the high-end ones are just nearby.

ROYAL BREAKFAST

I also receive a coupon upon check-in that can be used to redeem the finest confectionery at the Royal Hawaiian Bakery, which is quite popular for its Banana Macadamia Nut Muffin. Of course, I redeem mine on the second morning.

What I don't know is that I can redeem not one but six types of pastry from the bakery selections. Since everything looks delicious, I select two each of the signature muffins, scones and danish of the day.

I also get to have breakfast at the upscale beachside restaurant,Surf Lanai, on my last day.

It's an elegant restaurant with spectacular view of the Waikiki Beach. You can choose to sit inside or under the pink parasol nearer to the beach. Surf Lanai offers guests the island-inspired breakfast favourites, including Pink Palace Pancakes and The Royal Loco Moco — they call it the Royal Treatment.

The Royal Breakfast Buffet is priced at USD38 (RM163) for adults, and USD18 for children aged between 6 and 12.
