Celebration an expression of goodwill, benevolence

WOMEN, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Karim’s recent announcement that Malaysia would celebrate Grandparents Day annually on the first Sunday of October is most welcome.

From time immemorial, grandparents have been and continue to play a vital role in the wellbeing of the family, contributing in no small measure to the family’s health and happiness.

This invaluable support in many forms has helped to develop a cohesive community and enhance the nation’s economic growth.

The increase in life expectancy has enabled Malaysians to stay healthy and live well beyond 90. Grandparents have used this asset for the benefit of their family. They are a source of strength and comfort for their children. Their love, care and guidance are profound and immeasurable.

Setting aside a day in a year to show them our appreciation will go a long way towards making them feel they still have an important role in society. It will also bring them comfort and happiness.

The initiative should be seen as an expression of goodwill and benevolence, and efforts must be made to make the event a great success this year and beyond.
