Hilarity for charity

KUALA LUMPUR: A charity comedy show starring local comedian Allan Perera will be held at PJ Live Arts in Jaya One, Petaling Jaya from Oct 6 till 11.

Aptly called The Allan Perera Giggle Charity Show, the event, sponsored by Brickfileds Asia Collecge (BAC), is aimed at supporting the cause for free education in Malaysia.

Proceeds from the sale of tickets will go towards Edunation, a non-profitable platform supported by BAC that focuses on developing a freely accessible education system.

Perera’s 100-minute comedy show comprises two parts: A musical called A Vinyl Invasion, and his comedy satire Malaysia’s Got Scandal. It will see him playing many Malaysian-inspired characters such as Elvis Tan, Y.B. Wan Bedek Wan Temberang, Saudara Kam Mun Ting and Guitar Joe.

Perera’s comedy show also has inspired the Giggle Challenge, a social media-driven awareness and fundraising gig, similar to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The idea is to gather as many giggles as possible through social media with every giggle converting to a five sen donation toward Edunation’s efforts to provide free education for all Malaysian school children.

To date, Edunation has produced more than 2,500 learning videos, hundreds of practices and has co-organised syllabus-focused seminars for Form 1 till 5 students.

“With the support we have from both donors and users, we are expecting to double the number of users before the end of the year; from the initial 25,000 to 50,000,” said Edunation founder Edmond Yap.

The public can do their bit for charity by participating in the Giggle Challenge.

Here’s how: Make a video of you giggling, and challenge five of your friends via social media to do the same, with the hashtags #gigglecharity and #edunation.
