Beauty in the dark

Designer Rizalman Ibrahim uses deep tones to bring out the feminine aspects of beauty in women, writes Syida Lizta Amirul Ihsan

ONLINE retail outfit Zalora may have a long list of designer collaborations for Hari Raya but it is Rizalman’s creations that stand out.

How could it not, when the collection evokes old glamour with generous use of lace, crepe silk and georgette that bring out the female figure and enhance femininity.

Colours are bold and dark, and the lace and brocade give added texture.

Rizalman’s signature form-fitting cut and elegant baju kurung takes centre stage in this collection, showcasing the evolution of the designer.

Embellishments are kept to a bare minimum, as Rizalman focuses on the use of exquisite fabrics to highlight the elegance of each piece. The metallic elements also create an old-world sophistication.

Zalora managing director Guilio Xiloyannis says: “This is our second year working with Rizalman and we are very pleased with his latest collection for Zalora as well as the creative talent that he put into the editorial material that comes with it.”

SHADES AND COLOURS

DESIGNER Rizalman Ibrahim elaborates on his 2014 designs:

Why did you use dark shades this time around?

Dark shades, especially black, are my signature colours. Black flatters every body shape.

Why did you go back in time for new creations?

Invention in fashion means creating new patterns or new cuts. I don’t do invention in fashion, I twist ideas and to do that, it’s always good to be inspired by the past.

What is your favourite fashion era and why?

Choosing an era is hard — I love the 1950s the most, the 20s for its silhouette, 70s for its prints and 80s for its bravery.

Name three movies that define your take on fashion.

Sex And The City, The Great Gatsby and Elizabeth.

The most important element in an attire is the cut. How do you keep it consistent to flatter the female form?

Through the fabrics, of course!

Is there a wrong way to wear jersey?

Always cut it to form, not baggy.

How do you avoid repetition in your collections?

Always create new silhouettes and detailing parallel to trends.

What looks best on men for Raya — Baju Melayu teluk belanga or cekak musang? Why?

Teluk Belanga, because it’s always more comfortable.

What defines Hari Raya for you?

Eat, pray, sleep.

What fabrics should women avoid during Hari Raya?

Perspiration is our great enemy. Use natural fabrics such as cotton or silk.

SHAPES OF THINGS PAST

FOR Syomir Izwa, another local designer collaborating with Zalora this festive season, the Art Deco movement is written all over his creations.

Inspired by the strong, geometric details of the decorative style, he combined those elements with traditional baju kurung aesthetics, weaving the two ideas together to create stylish looks ideal for modern women.

There’s a certain European touch to his collection, which plays black, white, nude and brown tones against macaroon-like hues of peach, turquoise, blue, yellow and lime. Pleats and colour-blocking complete the Art Deco effect.

The apparels are made mainly from organic bamboo cotton. The comfort and coolness of the material allows the wearer to feel at ease in warm weather.

The collection comprises mini kurung sets, baju kurung sets, as well as long dresses.
