Homeless shelter to be ready in six months: Najib

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, on his surprise visit to the homeless at Kota Raya here last night to personally see their condition, had instructed the respective ministries and agencies to urgently find a solution for the homeless, suggesting a shelter to be provided to them.

Najib, after his visit, told reporters that the homeless must be provided with a shelter where they could sleep, shower, and safely keep their belongings.

“Upon seeing their condition, listening to the people here, and a brief discussion, these homeless cannot be left living on the streets and we will provide them with a shelter where they could sleep, shower, and safely keep their belongings. All they have requested is for the basics,” he said.

Najib added that the process to identify a suitable location and to move the homeless into the shelter may take some six months.

The prime minister had arrived at Kota Raya about 10.15pm last night and personally met with the homeless there.

He was accompanied by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, Federal Territories ministry secretary-general Datuk Adnan Md Ikhsan and Pertiwi Soup Kitchen chairman and founder Munirah Abdul Hamid.

There are more than 1,000 homeless people in the city.
