MH17: Malaysian ambassador to Ukraine to brief special investigation team on situation

KIEV: Malaysian ambassador to Ukraine Chuah Teong Ban was set to meet the leaders of the various agencies that arrived here early today for a special briefing on the current situation regarding the loss of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

The group of 131 people arrived at 4am local time (9am Malaysian time) and were met by embassy officials led by Chuah at Borispol Kiev International Airport.

Among the groups are the police forensics unit, Smart team, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Jakim and armed forces.

MAS officials were also aboard the special MAS charter from Malaysia.

They are here to investigate and search for and identify remains following the loss of the Boeing 777 aircraft near Snizhne, some 800km from here, believed to be after it was shot down by a Russian-made BUK surface-to-air missile (SAM).

Russia, Ukraine and pro-Russian separatist group Donetsk People's Republic have all denied shooting down the aircraft, pointing fingers at each other instead.

The United States, however, has said information points to the separatists having brought down the plane, leading to loss of almost 300 people aboard the flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

Chuah today is expected to brief the leaders on efforts being done to bring them to the crash site to investigate, recover the flight's black box, recover remains for identification and repatriation and recover whatever can be recovered from the aircraft.

Things are still in limbo, however, as it is understood negotiations between the Ukraine government and separatists for a safe corridor to allow recovery efforts to go on in the rebel-held area are still at an impasse.

Any move to the area is expected to take place only after the weekend, it is learned.
