Litterbugs to face the music

ALOR STAR: IN order to make the state a better place to live, Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (PPSPPA) and Environment Idaman Bhd (Envi) will come down hard on those who throw rubbish indiscriminately.

PPSPPA chief executive officer Datuk Ab Rahim Md Noor said it would help to make Kedah to be known as “Clean City” by 2018.

“We need to educate the people not to throw rubbish indiscriminately because it ends up clogging the drains which become breeding grounds for mosquitoes,” he said.

“The problem lies in society’s ignorance and lackadaisical attitude.

“The culprits will throw rubbish just about anywhere they like. They have no respect for the environment.”

Rahim said, last month, PPSPPA took legal action against a contractor after construction materials were found to have scattered in Pasar Besar.

“We will not hesitate to take legal action against people who throw rubbish or construction materials indiscriminately,” he said after distributing bubur lambuk to 200 people at Darulaman Stadium Bazaar Ramadan, here, recently.

Envi chief executive officer Mhd Saiful Anuar Zainal said, besides legal action, PPSPPA and Envi would also carry out an undercover operation called “Intip dan Cekup” operation soon.

“Enforcement officers will take photos of people who throw rubbish anywhere they like,” he said.

“We will cooperate with the relevant agency and will not hesitate to take action against the culprit.”
