Cover up in style

Former model and entrepreneur Natasha Hudson offers Nadia Badarudin some handy tips on tudung styling

CHOOSING the right tudung for that special Hari Raya outfit is not that difficult.

However, it’s the styling up and adorning with the right accessories to match an outfit that most women are clueless about. It’s always tricky to attain balance between stepping out stylish in hijab and wearing the pieces without making people turn their heads for the wrong reasons.

If you’re thinking of jazzing up your tudung and baju with gold accessories for Hari Raya, local jeweller Poh Kong has a new range of dazzling yellow and white gold pieces — the Bunga Raya Collection — under its Anggun series for women who want to add a touch of class to their Raya look.

The collection offers earrings, necklaces, pendants, bangles, rings and brooches featuring hibiscus as the main design motif.

Poh Kong has also teamed up with celebrity and Dreamcloud (modest clothing and hijab line) founder Natasha Hudson to share some tips on hijab-styling and how to bling it on with floral-inspired accessories.

NEAT

The Turkish hijab style is simple and neat. First, balance out the scarf with one side longer than the other. Pin both sides together.

Take the edge of the longer end and wrap it around the neck. Using the longer end of the scarf, continue making a circle around the neck. Finally, tie a knot or use another pin to hold the scarf together.

Natasha says a minimalist ensemble goes best with this elegant look. She recommends pairing it with a long necklace that has hibiscus at the heart of the design and a bed of floral motifs at its base. Keep the option open for a simple ring or a bangle.

YOUTHFUL

Layers may look messy to some but this style, known as tudung Arab, is popular with the youth. First, balance out the shawl with one side longer than the other, giving the longer end room to manoeuvre over the face. Pin both sides together.

Take the longer side and wrap it around the face, with the far end nicely placed just above the temple.

Natasha says a brooch is recommended to keep the shawl in place. Choose Poh Kong’s classy and distinctive hibiscus-shaped brooch or the unique, egg-shaped brooch with floral motifs to go with the style. Apart from the brooch, choose a bangle or a statement ring or both to complete the fun look.

BOLD

Bored of the common hijab styles? Think turban. First, balance out the shawl evenly. Twirl both sides of the shawl and place them horizontally, one on top of the other just above the forehead. Wrap both twirls around the head. Finally, tuck in the ends of both twirls neatly.

Wear the turban over an inner layer (the material worn underneath the tudung) of plain colours or the tudung. This style is meant only for bold and confident women.

Natasha says the turban enables the wearer to be versatile and wear more accessories. Besides a long necklace with a chunky pendant, add a ring and bangles in stack. Pin up a brooch on the turban’s front or side to add a touch of glamour.

Just right for children

Poh Kong’s Anggun series includes the Manja Collection for children. The sweet and simple collection features earrings, necklaces, pendants, bangles and rings in hibiscus and jasmine motifs. Details at www.pohkong.com.my or www.facebook.com/pohkongjewellers.
