Cambodia court jails American for child sexual harassment

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Tuesday sentenced American national Daniel Stephen Johnson to one year in jail for sexual harassment against minors, Xinhua news agency reported.

Johnson, 36, was found guilty of committing sexual harassment against five boys under 15 years of age.

Johnson, a former director of an unlicensed Christian Hope Transitions orphanage in Phnom Penh, was arrested by Cambodian police in collaboration with the FBI last December.

Non-governmental organisation Action Pour Les Enfants director Samleang Seila said Wednesday the sentence given to Jonhson was “too lenient.”

“That is a very light sentence. The NGO is disappointed the court did not issue a deportation order to Johnson after his sentence,” said Seila.

Cambodia launched an anti-paedophilia operation in 2003 to end its reputation as a haven for child sex offenders. Dozens of foreigners have been jailed for child sex crimes since. –BERNAMA
