City Hall, RTD link to blacklist traffic offenders

KUALA LUMPUR: SOME 1.2 million motorists who have failed to settle City Hall traffic compounds may face being blacklisted by the Road Transport Department (RTD.

City Hall director-general Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said the blacklisted offenders will not be able to renew their driver’s licence and road tax as well as to transfer their vehicle’s ownership.

“Some 2,800 have already been blacklisted as they did not turn up in court after failing to settle the compounds for various offences.

“They include illegal parking, beating traffic lights, illegal U-turns, stopping in a yellow box at traffic light junctions and obstructing traffic.

“The first batch of blacklisted motorists are already in the RTD’s database. We were only able to start blacklisting them last October when both City Hall and RTD databases were linked online.

“We will be updating the RTD after court action has been taken on the offenders. They will be issued with arrest warrants and summoned to court before we are able proceed with the blacklist action.

“These include owners of cars, motorcycles and heavy vehicles. We are giving the public a chance to settle their compounds with a discounted rate of between RM30 and RM50 until end of the year,” he said, adding that the action was according to the Road Transport Act 1987.

Amin said close to 200 motorists are being blacklisted through court order on a daily basis.

“However, those who commit parking meter offences will not be blacklisted.”

He said 694,221 compounds have been issued from January till July this year.

About 5.4 million traffic compounds issued by City Hall from 2007 till last year remain unsettled.

“The reason we are coming down hard on the motorists is that there are too many vehicles on the road.

“We want to discourage the public from driving into the city and to use public transport instead.”

There are about 1.8 million vehicles travelling on city roads daily.

Amin said City Hall has recently completed a multi-storey car park with 300 bays in Jalan Masjid India, and two more are under construction in Taman Segar and Sri Hartamas.

For parking meter offences and offences by motorcyclists, the reduced fine is RM30 for each compound (from the original compound of RM100 and RM300, respectively); while the discounted rate for cars is RM50 (from original rate of RM300) and RM100 for heavy vehicles (from RM300).

The payments can be made at Pos Malaysia counters and online through MyEG website, www.myeg.com.my.
