Teachers sorry over FB post

GEORGE TOWN: The matter involving two teachers, one of whom allegedly threatened to torch a 17-year-old student for “liking” the “I love Israel” Facebook page, has been resolved amicably.

Penang Education Department director Osman Hussain said in a meeting three days ago that the teachers had apologised to the parents. The parent-teacher association president of the school was also present.

He said the matter was considered settled as the parents had accepted the apology and that the boy had returned to school. However, despite the apology, the case was still being investigated for sedition, state Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Kesah said.

The fifth-former filed a police report after a teacher from his school allegedly circulated a screen-captured image of the controversial post, which prompted attacks from other Facebook users to cut off ties with the student.

Another teacher, purportedly from the same school, went a step further, leaving on the first teacher’s Facebook page that is accessible only to friends, a message that read: Kita bakor je hahaha (We just burn hahaha).

Apart from the youth, police were also investigating those who threatened him for criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

Police have also sought the assistance of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission in the investigation.
