Trains, buses to observe two minutes of silence

KUALA LUMPUR: Public transportation will come to a standstill as the two minutes of silence is observed today as a mark of respect for the victims of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 tragedy.

Land Public Transport Commission chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar yesterday said all public transport vehicles would observe the two minutes of silence, adding that they would stop at checkpoints, bus stops and stations.

RapidKL and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) has confirmed that its services would be temporarily halted today to observe the minute of silence.

A RapidKL spokesman said all LRT and monorail stations and services would halt operations for the two minutes of silence.

“During this period, the following message would be announced: ‘RapidKL’s service is temporarily halted in respect of the National Day of Mourning. Let us pray for (the victims of) flight MH17’ on board trains and at platforms and concourses. After a brief halt, the trains will continue on to their destinations,” said the spokesman.

KTMB corporate communications manager Siti Badariah Wan Hanafi said an announcement would be made at every station before the two minutes of silence begins, to allow passengers to reflect on the tragedy of flight MH17 and the fate of its crew and passengers.

A Malaysian Highway Authority spokesman said selected booths on highways would have electronic boards urging drivers in the queue to alight from their vehicles.

A nationwide two-minute silence is expected to be observed between 10.45am to 11.15am and will be announced through official government radio and television channels.
