Embassy mourns MH17 victims

THE Malaysian embassy in the Netherlands yesterday commemorated the national day of mourning for the Malaysia Airlines MH17 victims by flying the Jalur Gemilang at half mast.

The solemn ceremony was attended by embassy second secretary Halmah Hassan, and Malaysian counsellor to Finland, Devrin Jeck, as well as other embassy staff.

This is the second time that the national flag has been lowered to commemorate the MH17 tragedy here.

The first time was on July 23, when the Dutch government held its day of mourning follow-
ing the arrival of the remains
of Dutch victims in the Netherlands.

Halmah said the embassy’s 17 staff shared the sorrow felt by other Malaysians.

She said the embassy and staff
of other Malaysian agencies
here would assist in expediting the
return of other Malaysian
victims’ remains to Kuala Lumpur.

Tahlil (prayers for the dead) were also held for the victims of
the MH17 tragedy, attended by members of the team assigned to handle the remains of Muslim victims. The prayers were led by Putrajaya grand imam Abdul Manaf Mat.

The team comprises Malaysian Islamic Religious Development Department officials and the Malaysian Armed Forces
Religious Corp.

The team will remain in the Netherlands to handle the remains of more Muslim victims who are expected to be sent home to Kuala Lumpur soon.
