Penang keglers shine again

GEORGE TOWN: AFTER an embarrassing and unproductive outing at the Perlis Malaysia Games in June, the Penang junior bowlers brought some smile to the bowling fraternity in the state recently.

The junior bowlers rose to the occasion to clinch the overall title in the fourth leg of the Milo Ranking Masters 2014 at the Sunshine Square Premium Lane Bowling Centre in Bayan Baru.

They clinched three of the four gold at stake, one silver and two bronze medals in the event hosted by the Penang Tenpin Bowling Association.

Kedah bowlers took a gold and a silver for second spot while Perak and Negri Sembilan won a silver each for joint third spot while Perlis collected two bronze medals.

Megat Zaqrul Haiqal Megat Zairudin, who had been playing second fiddle to Nur Amirah Farihah Azhlan in the Mixed Under-12 category, clinched the gold in her absence.

The 11-year-old Megat Zaqrul Haiqal, who also had a high game of 241 pinfalls, posted lines of 152, 189, 241, 162, 160 and 142 for a 1,046 total.

Perak’s 12-year-old Afifhddin Luqman rolled down lines of 184, 167, 107, 183 189 and 188 for a 1,018 total while Penang’s Muhammad Hariz Adlan Azman, who is now very inconsistent, knocked down lines of 164, 201, 175, 137, 174 and 166 for a 1,017 total for second and third spot respectively.

Muhammad Hariz Adlan’s elder sibling, Muhammad Akif Afif Azman has improved by leaps and bounds at every leg of the competition and finally won the Mixed Under-16 category in the fourth leg.

The 15-year-old SMK Seberang Jaya student, who also had a high score of 254 pinfalls, posted lines of 254, 144, 195, 212, 151, 211, 173 and 193 for a 1,533 total.

Teammate Ong Siang Leing scored 180, 185, 162, 210, 234, 158, 191 and 182 for a 1,502 total for second place while Perak’s Muhd Shafiy Zaim knocked down 200, 179, 124, 227, 195, 226, 141 and 164 for 1,456 and the bronze.
