Pas objects to dates

KOTA BARU: Pas is unhappy with the dates of the Pengkalan Kubor by-election.

The campaign period between the Sept 13 nomination and Sept 25 polls date will clash with its annual muktamar, which is being held for the first time in Johor.

Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, who is also a Pas central committee member, said he was disappointed with the dates chosen and hoped it was not intentionally done to hamper the opposition’s campaign.

“It looked like the EC did not take into account such matters. They should have at least contacted political parties before deciding on the dates.

“This is the second time a by-election is being held when we are conducting our muktamar. The first time was during the Bukit Selambau state by-election in Kedah in 2009, when the muktamar was held in Ipoh, Perak,” he said.

Pas’ muktamar in Johor Baru is slated to be held from Sept 16 to Sept 20.

Amar said the party had no choice but to divide their work among party members to ensure campaigning was not disrupted.

“Delegates for the various wings will go ahead and attend their meetings and return as soon as it is over.

“Those who are not involved in the meeting will have to take over the work temporarily," he said.

On the decision whether Pas would be fielding a candidate in the seat, which was contested by PKR in the last general action, Amar said no final decision had been made on the matter.
