Twitter plans Jakarta office

JAKARTA: Social media giant Twitter has confirmed that the company will soon open an office in one of the Twitter capitals of the world.

Adam Bain, Twitter’s global president of revenue and partnership, who was here on a visit, confirmed the plan via his Twitter account @adambain.

“Terima kasih [Thank you] for welcoming us, Indonesia! I’m in Jakarta today to say that Twitter will open an office here soon,” he tweeted on Friday morning as he posted a photo of him and two Twitter executives in the foreground of the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle.

The company said in a statement it sees Indonesia as its largest emerging market, “with millions of local consumers, partners and advertisers using our platform every day”.

The office here, which will be opened in three to six months, will be Twitter’s sixth office in the Asia-Pacific region, but only the second in Southeast Asia. The company has a regional base in Singapore.

Its plans to set up operations in Indonesia comes after millions of Indonesians took to the polls on July 9 to vote for a new president, taking to social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, to voice their opinions and promote their candidates.

“With a positive business environment following the presidential election”, Twitter said, “the company believes now is the right opportunity to increase its commitment and to grow its presence in Indonesia.”

The company also said it was looking to hire people for its sales support team and business development staff, and that it was interested in establishing media partnerships.

In a June 4 report, Detik.com said there were close to 20 million active Twitter users in Indonesia.
