Lions Clubs hold World Environment Day event

KUALA LUMPUR: A shared concern for saving Mother Earth saw 19 Lions Clubs from here joining forces to stage a World Environment Day event at HELP College of Arts and Technology in Fraser Business Park recently.

The event, held in collaboration with the college, featured activities such as a recyclable materials outfit design contest, public speaking platform, art exhibition, food-and-fun fair, lantern making contest and salad dressing competition.

Visitors were encouraged to pen messages of support for conservation and reduction of the carbon footprint on a papier mache globe.

Dr K. Kalithasan of the Global Environment Centre gave a presentation entitled Raise Your Voice, Not The Sea Level.

International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organisation deputy director-general Stuart Scott conducted a multimedia presentation on Climate Change: Urgent Risk, Urgent Action. The organisation is an affiliate of the United Nations.

Scott, the first environmentalist Wall Street stockbroker in the 1970s, explored and answered questions on climate change by incorporating the most recent scientific findings.

“Society must change before we commit irreversible damage to the Earth’s natural systems upon which all of life depends,” he said.

Trained by former US vice-president Al Gore, Scott also presented personal, political and economic policy steps towards solving the world’s complex ecological-economic dilemma, and a transition away from reliance on fossil fuels.

District 308B1 governor Lim Hoe Guan was present. The Lions Clubs which took part included KL Central, Ampang, KL Bukit Kiara, KL (Host), Pantai Hills, KL Sentul, KL North, KL Taman Tun and KL Pavilion.

Members of the Leo Clubs of HELP College of Arts and Technology, Kolej Damansara Utama and SMK Damansara Utama took part in the competitions.

They showed off their oratorial skills and their creativity in designing ornaments and jewellery using recyclable materials.

Funds raised at the event were donated to the Cheshire Home. By Ricky Yap
