KUALA Langat District Council (MDKL) and Retromania organisers made history recently when they were included in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for the Largest Retro Motorcycle Gathering.
MDKL president Mohd Azhar Mohd Ali said the Retromania gathering saw 4,100 retro motorcycles, mainly from the 1970s and 1980s era in one spot on June 1.
“This gathering was organised as a tourist attraction because we wanted Morib beach to be associated with retro motorcycle gatherings.
“However, we decided to get it into the MBR after the huge participation last year.
“I am glad we made it into the MBR this year,” he said.
More than 10,000 bikes were on display but only 4,100 were in the retro category.
Bike owners had started to flood the area by 6am to obtain the best display spot for their machines.
“We could have gotten more bikes for display but due to the limited space, many left the event after the parking space ran out,” said Azhar.
Retromania spokesman Ahmad Hamdan Mohamad Ishak said
that the event consisted of several groups of avid retro motorcycle owners and collectors from all across Malaysia.
“In the the inaugural gathering held at in Telok Kemang in 2008, there were only 500 retro bikes,” said Ahmad Hamdan, fondly known as Mamat Kapar.
He said the number had grown and the event was even attracting bikers from Indonesia and Australia.
“Who would have thought that old bikes could unite people from all walks of life across the country?
“Today is a reunion of retro motorcycle enthusiasts,” he said.
He said the motorcyclists will be riding through some historical towns in vintage attire.
MDKL will be organising a gathering of vintage bicycles in October.
