RM300 million boost for Langkawi broadband services: Najib

LANGKAWI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today announced RM300 million investment to enhanced broadband services in Langkawi, which would improve 3G services coverage in the popular tourism island by 97 per cent come next year.

"The initiative comprise of the construction of three 1Malaysia Internet Centre, 260 1Malaysia Wifi hotspots, 10 new telecommunication towers, two High Speed Broadband sub-stations, 100km fibre-optic cable line, additional underwater cable from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi and the upgrading of 2G mobile Internet services to 3G," Najib said in his speech at the launching of the Langkawi Communications Empowerment Initiative and 1Malaysia Broadband Carnival at Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre today.

The Internet upgrading initiative is seen in line with the Asean Summit 2015 which is scheduled to be held in Langkawi next July.

Najib had also announced that the three 1Malaysia Internet Centre in Langkawi would be set-up in Kampung Padang Wahid, Padang Lalang and Taman Delima.

The event was jointly organised by Communications and Multimedia Ministry, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) and Telekom Malaysia.

The objective of the event is to increase the awareness on high speed broadband services among the people of Langkawi.
