Malaysia win two bronze at Asian athletics meet

KUALA LUMPUR: Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam, who won the 200m bronze on Friday, anchored his 4x100m relay teammates Hanssen Yap, Dexter Bedie and Sayyid Amin Roslan to fifth place in the final at the Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships in Dubai yesterday.

The Malaysians clocked 40.65 seconds. Hong Kong won the 4x100m gold with 39.67. Sri Lanka (39.81) and India (40.01) were second and third respectively.

Malaysia ended the four-day Asian meet with two bronze. Besides Pengiran's 200m bronze, Ng Tak Sing won the triple jump bronze. Last year in Yecheon, South Korea, Malaysia won only one bronze, through Pengiran in the 200m.

Pengiran, Tak Sing and 100m sprinter Hanseen have qualified for the World Junior Championships in Lima, Peru, in August from their performances in Dubai.

Coach Jumain Taepe praised the 18-year-old Pengiran for bettering his 200m personal best time twice (21.33) and (21.28) in two days in Dubai.

On the last day, Malaysia's Tan Zhi Hang leaped 7.02m to finish eighth among 12 boys in the long jump final.

China's Junzheng Wei (7.76m) and Shengming Zhang (7.58m) won gold and silver respectively. India's Mohd Atta Sazid (7.52m) bagged bronze.
