Miri geared up for mega celebration

MIRI: It is all systems go for the national-level mega celebration to herald the 51st anniversary of Malaysia’s establishment today.

Colourful light decorations illuminate the Miri City Fan Complex, which is the venue for this year’s Malaysia Day celebration.

The patriotic spirit in the air is evident, with the Jalur Gemilang and Sarawak state flags hoisted at nearly every corner of the complex.

The 500 performers involved in the celebration gave it their all during the final rehearsal last night.

Most were decked in blue and red T-shirts, emblazoned with the words Malaysia, Di Sini Lahirnya Cinta (Malaysia, Where Love Grows).

Present at the rehearsal was Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He spent more than 30 minutes checking all aspects of the event, from the performances to the materials that will be used in a musical fireworks display. He also mingled with the crowd that had gathered to watch the rehearsal.

State minister in charge of the celebration Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said more than 20,000 local and foreign tourists were expected to attend the celebration.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife, Toh Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi, are expected to attend.

Joining the head of state will be Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who will represent Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

Also expected to be present are cabinet ministers, including Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, Ministers in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar and Datuk Wee Ka Siong, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa.

Performances showcasing the diversity of the multi-ethnic people of the state have been lined up for the event, which will kick off at 7pm. During the celebration, a five-minute video on the formation of the nation will be aired. Malaysia Day has been celebrated since 2010.
