Cops: No permit issued for mega rally for Palestine

KUALA LUMPUR: Wangsa Maju police have denied that they have given the green light for Sekretariat Solidariti Palestine (SSP) to hold its mega rally in support of Palestine on Saturday.

Wangsa Maju police chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah said police held a meeting with the organisers on Thursday where they had advised SSP to apply for a permit for the rally.

However, he said, up till today, the organiser had yet to submit any information about the rally nor request for approval for it to be held.

"As such, police advise the public not to gather or hold any rally. We will take action against anyone who breaks the law," he said in a statement.

The media had reported that SSP spokesman Syed Sheikh Al-Attas Syed Hassan had said that Wangsa Maju police had given it the green light to proceed with the mega rally.

However, he had said Dang Wangi police had yet to respond to the group's notification for the rally.

He said Kuala Lumpur City Hall, meanwhile, had yet to approve SSP's request to use Padang Merbok as the assembly point, though he claimed that they had been informed that there should be no issue there.

According to plans for the rally, protesters are to meet at the Tabung Haji building in Jalan Tun Razak before marching to Padang Merbok.

The planned checkpoints for the rally include the United States embassy, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and the Renaissance Hotel.
