MoU for study at Sipitang signed

KOTA KINABALU: The petrochemical industry in Sabah is expanding further with an upcoming feasibility study to explore the potential of producing urea and ammonia derivatives at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the study was signed by three parties in Poland recently, witnessed by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

The signatories were Petronas Chemicals Group Berhad, Grupa Azoty Pulawy and Sipitang Oil and Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC).

Petronas Chemicals president Shazali Hamzah, Grupa Azoty vice-president Marian Rybak and SOGDC general manager Abdul Kadir Abdullah signed the MoU.

Musa said the MoU was another step towards the development of the industrial park located about 150km south of Kota Kinabalu.

“It has been a fruitful visit and I am confident that this MOU will kick- start the development of ammonia and urea derivatives in the industrial park.

“The collaboration with leading industry players, such as Petronas Chemicals and Grupa Azoty, one of the biggest fertilizer producers in Europe, bodes well for Sabah.

“They have the expertise and technological know-how, and together, we can jointly develop the petrochemical industry in Sabah.”

The MoU marked the first step for the development of urea and ammonia derivatives for the Asian agriculture industry.

The parties would undertake a preliminary study on the technical, economic, raw material supply, logistic, infrastructure and utilities aspects of the petrochemical products in Sipitang.
