Sweet act of unity

SEGAMAT: In celebrating Malaysia Day recently, some 300 residents got together to prepare dodol, a traditional sweet toffee confection.

The residents from the district help fill and stir 13 giant woks full of dodol.

Segamat’s National Unity and Integration Department acting officer Rafidah Suboh said the idea to make dodol stemmed from the spirit of gotong-royong in preparing the dish.

“Everyone has to help stir the dodol until it’s fully cooked.

“That is the spirit of togetherness and unity, and the Malaysian way of fostering closer ties with our neighbours,” she said during the dodol-making session held at Masjid Jamek Segamat.

Rafidah said each Rukun
Tetangga (RT) sent district
representatives to participate and contribute ingredients to make the confection.

The dodol-cooking session
started at 8am and ended in the afternoon.

Rafidah said that they might continue to organise similar events in the future. By Ahmad Ismail
