Sedition Act still in force - Zahid

SERI MANJUNG: The Sedition Act 1948 is still being enforced in the country as it is currently still valid legislation.

The public is advised not to be taken in with claims made by certain quarters that the Sedition Act has no effect since a new law is expected to replace the 1948 Act.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stressed that the Sedition Act was still in force and he had instructed police to use the law to arrest those found to have uttered seditious statements.

"At present there is no replacement law to the Sedition Act.

"The Cabinet has not received any draft law to replace the Act from the Attorney-General's Chambers," he said at the opening of the Lumut Umno division meeting at the Dewan Merdeka here today.

Also present at the opening was Perak Umno liaison chief and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir who is division chairman.
