Duo detained for smuggling rifles and ammunition in Langkawi

ALOR STAR: Police detained a couple, an African man and Thai woman for smuggling seven Italian-made Benelli Agro rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition of various types on Thursday.

The items were found hidden in the engine of a luxurious cruise moored at Kuah jetty in Langkawi at about 12.30pm.

State police chief Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said the suspects aged 43 and 30 were believed to be spending their holiday at the island prior to the arrest.

In a separate bust, police had nabbed two local men for trafficking 15kg of cannabis, heroin and syabu with estimated street values of RM150,000 during a raid at a shopping mall in Sungai Petani at 8.45pm on the same day.

He said the duo, aged 40 and 38, who hailed from Penang were arrested while traveling in a Proton Iswara.
