MCMC bullish on RM600m content exports

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is confident of achieving its target of RM600 million in content exports by year-end.

Its chairman, Datuk Mohamed Shahril Tarmizi told Business Times that the commission has already sold RM490 million of content as of end of August this year.

“We are confident of achieving this target of RM600 million in content export sales as we have already achieved 60 per cent of that at RM490 million,” he said.

Shahril said Malaysia has abundance of creative context when it comes to film, animation and the likes.

“And the opportunity for that to be exploited and to generate higher income to the economy is ripe for the taking as we have a dynamic and cohesive ecosystem of information and communications technology (ICT).

“We have to move beyond of asking what the government can do for us and look at this as a cohesive ecosystem with all stake players involved.

“The telco providers need to come up with innovative new services that could boost the country’s digital penetration, the government should look into getting more investments and we, as the regulators, will be more efficient in regulating the industry,” he said on the sidelines of KL Converge on Wednesday,

Shahril also said the MCMC is in talks with the government in raising the budget for the ICT and multimedia industry in the lead-up to the 2015 Budget.

“MCMC is always in talks with the government. It is too soon to tell but in order for the industry to grow further and for us to cross into regional markets, we do need bigger investments,” he said.
