Wee: More seminars on GST needed

JOHOR BARU: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong wants more seminars on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to be held as this would benefit the business community here.

Wee said many business operators were unaware whether they were subjected to GST.

“The local business community needs this and I will bring this matter up to the Treasury.”

He said this after attending a closed-door meeting with the Chinese business community from more than 30 associations at Wisma Tiong-Hua here recently.

Wee said other issues raised were that public accountants were charging some of their clients to get them registered with the government.

“A business seminar would make things clearer for business operators.

“They may not even need a public accountant to get their businesses registered for the GST.

“They could do it themselves and save the cost of hiring a public accountant to do it for them.”

The implementation of the GST is a strategy to sustain the nation’s economy and strengthen its fiscal position by increasing the government’s revenue and decreasing the nation’s dependence on international funds, which translates to alleviating the financial burden on companies as the GST imposes a standard rate of only six per cent.
