Poor drainage damages crops

MUAR: A faulty drainage system has been identified as the main cause of damaged crops faced by 93 padi farmers in Sungai Balang here during a dry spell.

Sungai Balang assemblyman Zaiton Ismail said she was going to seek an allocation of approximately RM4 million to resolve the problem, which involved 283ha of padi fields in Sungai Balang.

The rice shortage woe during the drought has affected the productivity which translates into loss for the farmers.

“If the drainage system is efficient, the crops will not be damaged even when there is a drought.

“Crops from seeds such as the CKK 220, MR269 and MR258 are suitable for planting in the area. With adequate water supply, there should not be any shortage of crops,” Zaiton said while visiting the farmers in Parit Yusof, Sungai Balang, on Monday. By Ibrahim Isa
