Law student detained by police over seditious Facebook posting

GEORGE TOWN: A 24-year-old law student was detained by police over an alleged seditious posting in his Facebook account on Tuesday night.

Dalbinder Singh Gill, who is also a nephew of former DAP chairman, the late Karpal Singh, was alleged to have posted a status update questioning Bumiputera rights and the monarchy.

Speaking to the New Straits Times, he said two policemen from Bukit Aman Cyber Crime Division went to his house about 8pm but he was not at home.

After learning about the policemen's visit, he surrendered himself to the police and was subsequently interrogated at the Northeast District police headquarters for about three hours from 10.45pm.

"I was told that they were investigating me under the Sedition Act 1948,” he said.

"I was later released on police bail at 1.30am. The police have also taken my smartphone and tablet.”

Meanwhile, district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said Dalbinder was being investigated under Section 4 (1) (c) of the Sedition Act 1948.

The case was being handled by the Brickfields district police Criminal Investigation Department, he added.
