klia2 to have three more walkalators

SEPANG: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is adding three new walkalators at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) to enhance passengers’ experience at the new terminal.

Its managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said the additional walkalators would be installed by year-end with two at the international departing level and one at international arrival area.

“Next year, we are looking to add 10 to 15 walkalators at klia2 at both the international and domestic sites to further ease the passenger flow,” he said during MAHB’s “Customer Comes First” media tour of klia2, here, yesterday.

The new terminal currently has 10 walkalators at both the international and domestic sites.

On the cost of the additional three walkalators, Badlisham said they were part of the original RM4 billion cost for klia2.

“We have high operating expenditure for klia2.

“It takes a lot to run a terminal that is four times the size of the previous low-cost carrier terminal but those (walkalators) are already the operating components that we have factored in... So, it will come out from the original cost of the terminal,” he said.

Business Times learnt that the walkalators will cost some RM1.3 million each.

Klia2 was officially launched on May 2 this year after a series of delays since 2009.

At 257,000 sq m of size, the new terminal is able to handle up to 45 million passengers annually.

To date, it has received some 24 million passengers.
