Jaafar Onn a patriot, says Hishammuddin

SHAH ALAM: The nation has lost a patriot in the demise of Leftenant General (R) Datuk Jaafar Datuk Onn, 81, said defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

He said Jaafar, who is also his uncle, has devoted his life to ensure Malaysia's peace and prosperity continue.

Describing Jaafar as a stern figure who always put his pricinples and nation's interest as top priority while serving in the army, Hishammuddin said the man has contributed immensely for religion, country and people.

"Such contributions should not be forgotten nor taken for granted by the younger generation. It should be our inspiration to have the same spirit and love for the country, religion and people," he told reporters after attending the tahlil at Jaafar's house in Shah Alam.

"I call upon everyone to say a little prayer for Jaafar and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who had helped the family go through this difficult time," he said.

Jaafar was a former deputy chief of the Armed Forces. He passed away in his house shortly after Maghrib yesterday.

He left behind a widow, Datin Fatimah Abdullah and two children Faridah and Farid, and seven grandchildren.

Jaafar was the younger brother to the third Prime Minister Tun Hussein Onn and the second child from six siblings.

His remains were put to rest at Shah Alam Muslim cemetery at Section 21 at 12.30pm.
