Robber shot dead after 10-km chase

KLANG: Selangor police shot dead a 30-year-old man believed to be a member of an armed robbery gang, when he tried to escape while trying to evade arrest at Jalan Panglima Hitam, here, last night.

Selangor CID chief Datuk Mohd Adnan Abdullah said officers from the elite team of D9 Special Investigations Division spotted a silver Proton Waja driven in a suspicious manner at Taman Sentosa, Klang during their regular patrol rounds.

A quick check on the number plate revealed that it was fake and that the car was reported missing in a separate incident in Subang last year.

The driver rammed into the police vehicle, sped off and a 10-km police chase began before the suspect crashed his car into a tree.

He got out of the wreck and started shooting at the police, prompting the officers to return fire, killing him.

Inspection on the suspect's car led to the discovery of a parang, fake car number plates, bullets, ski mask and gloves.

Mohd Adnan said the police believed the suspect belonged to a gang of armed robbers who targeted Klang Selatan and Klang Utara areas.

"There had been 11 cases of break-ins and robberies in the area this month alone. This could be the work of an organised group of robbers.

"Our investigations revealed that the suspect had 17 prior crime records, 11 cases in Selangor, four in Kedah, one each in Perak and Malacca.

"The body has been sent for post-mortem and more details of the investigation will be revealed soon," he said adding that no policeman was injured during the incident.
