Unhappy over lack of basic amenities

SELAYANG: VISITORS frequenting waterfalls near Kuala Lumpur want more facilities to be built at these sites.

During a visit to the Sungai Liam Waterfall, Streets found there were no toilet facilities.

There were a few “Do not litter” signs but the waterfall area was strewn with used styrofoam cups and plates.

There were only a handful of people were picnicking there.

A visitor, who only wanted to be known as Nili, said the authorities should build more facilities in this area.

“We can only use an abandoned building to change. There are also no toilets,” he said.

Ramli Daharum, a 32-year-old Orang Asli who lives nearby, said: “Most of the visitors do not clean up before they leave.

“Sometimes, we see bags of rubbish dumped by the riverside. They attract monkeys which scavenge for food.”

He said the area was closed a few years back because of leptospirosis cases.

“There is an abandoned building which I believe could be upgraded as a toilet or surau. However, the authorities are not taking any action,” he said.

Meanwhile, visitors at the Sungai Tekala Waterfall in Semenyih complained that they have to park by the roadside because there is no car park.

Mokhtar Yani, 50, said there should be a car park near the river.

“I came here with my family during the weekends,” he said.

“We have to walk quite a distance as there is no parking nearby.”

Another visitor, who wanted to be known only as Zura, said the authorities should build more toilets at the park.

“I have a 9-month-old baby and I find it difficult to go to the toilet outside the park,” she said.

Zura said more gazebos should also be built around the park.

“I pity the elderly who come with their children and grandchildren and have to sit on the ground,” she added.

However, we were quite pleased with the facilities at Sungai Sendat in Ulu Yam. There were parking facilities, gazebos, toilets and a changing room.

Khairul Muzammil Mohd Salim, 22, said more benches could be installed.

“Most visitors have to sit on the rocks. They have no other choice,” he said.

Zulhelmi Mustafa, 24, said he was satisfied with the condition of the park.

“I think the park is clean and very well taken care off.”
