Oil rig workers died from 35m fall

KEMAMAN: Two oil rig workers died on the spot when the fell from a height of 35m while working at their oil drilling ship about 152 nautical miles from Kerteh beach. 

In the 11.04pm on Saturday, Gabriel Lembang, 29, of Miri and Valentin Jirak, 31, of Sibu, suffered head injuries. 

It was learnt the victims, a mechanic and an electrician, were carrying out a routine inspection on the ship when the safety harness attached to a lifeboat broke, causing both to fall to the ship's deck.

District police chief Superintendent Che Suza Che Hitam said the victims were taken to the Kemaman Hospital in a helicopter for post mortem at 1.35pm on Sunday.

“Following the result of the port mortem, we have ruled out foul play and classified the case as sudden death,” he added.
