3 Malaysian firms in shortlist of Battersea project Phase 1

LONDON: Three Malaysian firms have been shortlisted for supplying flooring and doors and other materials for the first phase of the Battersea Power Station project, here.

Two companies are still involved in the tender process of the sub-contract packages valued at £5 million (RM26.33 billion).

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) has been the focal point for Malaysian suppliers to meet the specifications of Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC).

“BPSDC will review the materials going out for tender for Phase 1 of the project and then forward the quantity and brief specifications of the products to Matrade.

“The products range from flooring, joinery, doors and fittings to furniture, coatings and electrical products,” he said yesterday.

The companies were among the 16 potential companies identified by BPSDC in January, said Mustapa.

The first phase is a mixed use development comprising 866 apartments, including two penthouses, as well as retail facilities, theatre space and business studios in two blocks built on a podium, with two levels of basement parking.

Matrade will continue to source Malaysian suppliers for the second and third phases of the project.

Phase 3 will be launched on October 31.

Mustapa was briefed on the progress of the Battersea project by BPSDC chief executive Rob Tincknell.

The redevelopment of the power station, which was decommissioned 30 years ago, will involve 3,700 new homes, a shopping centre, hotels, offices and an art space.

Mustapa said the Battersea project would also have a “Malaysia Square” and he encouraged Malaysians to give their input.

Once completed, it will transform the area on the south bank of the River Thames into a vibrant neighbourhood, raising Malaysia’s profile in the London commercial property market.

The Battersea site was bought for £400 million by a consortium comprising SP Setia, Sime Darby and the Employees Provident Fund.

The whole development on a 8ha site will be worth £8 billion upon its completion in 2024.

The Battersea team has been working alongside Phase 2 and 3 architects to develop an international design concept for the
residential elements of the two phases.

Malaysian suppliers will be included in the product selection process, and those elements will be tendered next year and in 2016.
