MNCF yet to respond to suspension notice

THE Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) has yet to respond to its one-month suspension and if time runs out, it could face de-registration in 30 days.

The MNCF has two options: meet the 20 conditions set by the Sports Commissioner before the end of its suspension period or appeal to the sports minister.

Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said yesterday: “As of today, I have not received any appeal from the MNCF. The suspension is served by the sports commissioner, so they can either sort out the matter by fulfilling the conditions set or via an appeal.”

Sports Commissioner Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail on Friday announced that the MNCF has been slapped with a one-month suspension after it was found to have breached its constitution on several accounts.

The MNCF has come under scrutiny following failures of its multi-million ringgit road programme and for various irregularities in its accounts which also involved funds for the organisation of Le Tour de Langkawi between 2011 and last year.

Khairy had ordered an audit of MNCF’s accounts in January, which found various issues in its handling of public funds and on Aug 22, the process to suspend the federation’s registration was initiated.

As it stands now, the MNCF has 30 days to avoid de-registration, but three days into its suspension, the federation has yet to act.

MNCF deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad said: “As yet, I have not sighted the conditions set by the sports commissioner. But I do expect our president (Datuk Abu Samah Wahab) to call for a meeting soon.

“In order to act on it, I believe all of us have to be clear on what the MNCF is facing and decide on an appropriate next course of action.

“The suspension was announced on Friday evening, so I suppose that at least our executive committee will be informed of the matter soon.” By Arnaz M. Khairul
